But if you've never been through the process before, it can feel like a bit of a black box. What actually happens? How long does it take? Will there be people in your roof cavity? Do you need to be home all day?

We get these questions all the time. So here's a straightforward, no-jargon walkthrough of the entire solar installation journey in Canberra, from the moment you request a quote to the moment your panels are live and generating power.

Step 1: Getting a Quote (Week 1)

The process starts with a solar quote. A good Canberra solar installer won't just send you a generic price list, they'll want to understand your situation before recommending a system.

When you contact us, we'll ask for:

  • Your last electricity bill (so we can see your consumption in kWh and what you're currently paying)
  • The address of your property (so we can check your roof via satellite imagery before visiting)
  • Whether you have existing solar or battery storage
  • Any specific goals, bill reduction, battery backup, future EV charging, etc.

From there, we'll prepare a detailed proposal showing the recommended system size, the equipment we're proposing, the expected annual savings, and a clear breakdown of costs, including any applicable rebates or ACT Government Sustainable Household Scheme financing you're eligible for.

Tip: Always ask your installer to show you the expected payback period and first-year savings estimate based on your actual usage data, not generic assumptions.

Step 2: Site Assessment (Week 1–2)

Once you're ready to move forward, we'll arrange a site assessment. This is usually a quick visit, around 45 minutes to an hour, where one of our installers comes to your home to inspect the roof in person.

During the site visit, we'll look at:

  • Roof pitch, orientation, and shading from trees, chimneys, or neighbouring structures
  • Roof material and structural condition
  • Your switchboard, to confirm it can handle the new system or whether an upgrade is needed
  • Meter box and network connection type
  • Best cable routing from roof to inverter location

This step is important because it allows us to finalise the exact panel layout and confirm the quote before any paperwork is submitted. If anything at the site visit changes the recommendation, for example, if shading is more significant than it appeared on satellite imagery, we'll discuss updated options with you before proceeding.

Step 3: Approvals and Grid Connection (Week 2–4)

Before a single panel goes on your roof, your installer needs to handle several approvals. This is the behind-the-scenes work that many homeowners don't see, but it's essential.

In the ACT, this includes:

Submitting a Design and Application for Connection (DAC) to Evoenergy, the ACT's network operator, for systems that require grid connection approval.

Preparing compliant electrical design documentation in line with Australian Standards.

If you're using the ACT Sustainable Household Scheme, coordinating with the scheme's requirements and your chosen finance provider.

Approval timelines can vary. For most standard residential systems, grid approval from Evoenergy typically takes one to three weeks. Larger or more complex systems may take a little longer.

During this period, we'll keep you updated and confirm your installation date once approvals are in hand.

Step 4: Installation Day (1–2 Days On-Site)

This is the exciting part. A standard residential solar installation in Canberra takes one full day for most systems, occasionally two days for larger or more complex setups.

Here's what to expect on installation day:

Morning, Roof work: Our installers will arrive early (usually around 7:30–8am) and begin mounting the racking system to your roof. This involves drilling into your roof structure and securing aluminium rails that the solar panels will sit on. Panels are then lifted onto the roof and clipped into the racking.

Midday, Electrical work: With panels in place, the team will run DC cabling from the roof down to the inverter location (typically in your garage or on an exterior wall). The inverter is mounted and connected, and AC cabling is run to your switchboard. Your switchboard is also updated with any necessary upgrades, isolator switches, and safety devices.

Afternoon, Commissioning and testing: Once all connections are made, the system is powered on and tested. We check voltage, output, inverter communication, and make sure everything is operating within expected parameters.

You don't need to be home for the entire day, but we ask that someone is available at the start and end so we can walk you through the system and answer any questions.

We always clean up thoroughly before we leave. You shouldn't find any debris, drill shavings, or packaging left behind.

Step 5: Meter Reconfiguration (1–5 Business Days After Installation)

After installation, your system can't yet export electricity to the grid, that requires a meter reconfiguration by your energy retailer. Your installer submits the completed installation paperwork and Certificate of Electrical Compliance (CEC) to initiate this process.

In the ACT, meter reconfigurations are handled by Evoenergy and are typically completed within one to five business days. During this period, your solar system is still generating power and offsetting your own consumption, you just won't receive feed-in tariff credits for any excess until the meter is updated.

Once the meter is reconfigured, your retailer will notify you, and your system is fully live.

Step 6: You're Live, Now What?

The switch-on moment is genuinely satisfying. From here, your solar system runs automatically. There's nothing you need to do on a day-to-day basis, the inverter manages everything.

Most modern inverters come with a monitoring app that lets you see in real time how much power your panels are generating, how much your home is using, and how much is being exported to the grid. We'll walk you through setting this up before we leave.

A few things to know in the first weeks after going live:

Your first electricity bill after solar will likely look different, you'll see import and export figures separately. Don't be alarmed if it takes one billing cycle to fully reflect your solar credits.

System output varies by season. Winter days are shorter, so production is lower, but this is normal and accounted for in your payback estimates.

Solar panels require very little maintenance. An annual visual inspection and occasional cleaning (especially in dusty or pollen-heavy periods) is generally sufficient.
